BORN IN BOMBAY, MADE OF STEEL...
Bombayla Devi is the most consistent Indian archer in the last decade. But somehow, she has never been the media's darling. But the shy, soft-spoken Manipuri archer has had no complaints as she has continued to watch her so-called `star' teammates hog the limelight.
Rio will be Bombayla's third consecutive Olympics, a rare feat by any standard. At 31, as the mostexperienced archer, she will have to take up the added responsibility of guiding her younger teammates Deepika Kumari and Laxmi Rani Majhi in Rio. And, like a true leader, she will set the tone by hitting the first arrows.
Bombayla comes from a sporting family of Imphal. She was named Bombayla as she was born in Mumbai (then Bombay). She picked up archery at a very young age under her mother M Jamini Devi's guidance. Jamini Devi has been a state-level archery coach while her father Manglem Singh is a handball coach. She later joined the SAI centre in Imphal and won her first national title in 2006. She announced her arrival when she won gold in the recurve team event in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. In 2012, she was bestowed with the Arjuna Award.
