Didi bangs door on Left, but BJP gets its foot in
Kolkata:
TEAM TOI The Times of India May 17 2014
Bengal has voted for a paradigm shift, relegating the Left to the fringes and ushering in a saffron streak that looks set to change the state's political equations.
Mamata Banerjee turned out to be the biggest gainer in the multi-pronged contest, which divided opposition votes. Narendra Modi, on the other hand, broke the language barrier and gave BJP a thump of legitimacy in Bengal. It sends out clear indications that BJP is going to emerge as a key player in the 2016 assembly polls.
Mamata had sensed the saffron surge. She went into a no-holds-barred attack against Modi to consolidate the minority vote bank. Minorities mostly went with Trina mool and Congres because Left couldn't earn their confidence. Trinamool bagged all 12 constituencies reserved for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The finally tally of 34 -despite a 10% slump in vote share -exceeded even the party's expectations, a Trinamool leader acknowledged to TOI.
The other equally significant feature in the Bengal polls is the rise in BJP's vote share from just 6% in 2009 to a game-changing 17% in 2014. The Modi wave has smashed the party's record of 11% votes (in the 1991 Lok Sabha polls) during the Ram Janma Bhoomi movement.
The CPM vote share shrunk to a low 22.7%. It's an irony that the CPM score matches BJP's in a state ruled by the Left for 34 years.
