=Bannur=&lt;br /&gt;
Town in the Tirumakudal-Narsipur taluk of Mysore Dis- &lt;br /&gt;
trict, Mysore, situated in 12 20' N. and 76 52' E., 16 miles south-east &lt;br /&gt;
of Seringapatam. Population (1901), 5,119. The Sanskrit name was &lt;br /&gt;
Vahnipura, which became Banniyur, and now Bannur. This was an &lt;br /&gt;
important place in the eighth and tenth centuries under the Gangas. In &lt;br /&gt;
the twelfth century it was a great agrahara named Jananathachaturvedi- &lt;br /&gt;
mangala, with 1,200 Brahmans. Under Vijayanagar rule grants were &lt;br /&gt;
made there by the Mysore Rajas and local chiefs. The municipality &lt;br /&gt;
dates from 1899. The receipts and expenditure during the two years &lt;br /&gt;
ending 1901 averaged Rs. 2,100 and Rs. 1,700. In 1903-4 they were &lt;br /&gt;
