LOCATION: Kundian, NW region of Punjab Province; Approximately 200km SW of Islamabad

SIZE: 300MWe net

FACILITY STATUS: Under Construction

Once completed, CHASNUPP-2 will be a 300MWe net two-loop pressurized water reactor (PWR) utilizing low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel.

In May 2004, the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) contracted with the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) to build CHASNUPP-2, adjacent to CHASNUPP-1. Modeled after the CHASNUPP-1 design, construction began between late 2005 and early 2006, and the reactor is expected to enter commercial operation in mid- to late 2011. As with CHASNUPP-1, China is expected to supply the reactor's LEU fuel.

As a component of Pakistan's civilian nuclear program, the reactor will add to Pakistan's "plan to produce 8,800MW of nuclear power by 2030." The construction of CHASNUPP-2 has taken place under IAEA safeguards, and the IAEA will continue to monitor the reactor facility, the LEU supplied by China, and all spent fuel.
