I thank my good fortune for living in the same city as this most holy shrine, which enables me to visit and pay homage here as often as i wish to. This ritual hasn’t just nurtured me. It has actually helped me survive.</ins></div></td></tr>

Situated in what is now the heart of New Delhi, a mere ten minutes’ walk from the busy Connaught Place, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib was originally the bungalow of Raja Jai Singh of Amber, and was known as Jaisinghpura Palace. On being invited, the Guru agreed to stay here with Jai Singh, during his visit to Delhi.</ins></div></td></tr>

Disguising herself as a maid, she sat amongst the lady attendants. However, the Guru instantly identified her and sat on her lap, proclaiming, “This is the Rani”, thereby convincing her of his spiritual powers.</ins></div></td></tr>

Seeing this calamity engulfing so many, the Guru – out of love and compassion for the suffering – took upon himself the task of curing them. He poured ‘charanamrit’ into a chaubacha (small tank), and all those who took this sanctified water were cured.</ins></div></td></tr>

He died on March 30, 1664. The Guru was thereafter remembered as ‘Bala Pir’ and ‘Bala Guru’ in recognition of his noble deeds and great sacrifice.</ins></div></td></tr>

Today, Bangla Sahib is resplendent with its marble façade, stunning dome, large water tank and ‘nishan sahib’ (flagpole). The Gurdwara complex includes the shrine itself; a kitchen and langar hall; a school, art gallery, Baba Baghel Singh Museum, library, charitable hospital and a ‘Yatri Niwas’.</ins></div></td></tr>

I can feel the powerful, healing effect of the kirtan, although my relative ignorance of the Punjabi language prevents me from understanding its literal meaning. I realise that if my limited understanding can garner so much calmness and joy, things would have been a hundred times more positive if I did have that knowledge.</ins></div></td></tr>
