		+	New Delhi : India has improved its Climate Risk Index (CRI) rank from seventh worst affected country globally due to extreme weather events in 2019 to 49th in 2022. However, historically it remains among the top 10 most affected ones by figuring as the sixth worst in long-term (1993-2022) assessment.

		+	The findings are part of the CRI 2025, released by environmental think tank Germanwatch Wednesday, that analysed six indicators including fatalities and economic loss due to extreme weather events reported in the countries during 1993-2022.

		+	The report shows that India reported loss of 80,000 lives and nearly $180 billion in 400 extreme weather events in 30 years (1993-2022).

		+	Globally, over 7,65,000 people lost their lives due to more than 9,400 extreme weather events in the 30 years until 2022. It caused economic damages totaling $4.2 trillion (inflation-adjusted). Storms (35%), heat waves (30%) and floods (27%) caused the most fatalities during 1993-2022.

		+	The report, highlighting the consequences of globally increasing climate risks, shows seven of the 10 most affected countries in 2022 belonged to the high-income country group. “This clearly indicates that, while the coping capacities of high-income countries significantly exceed those of lower-income countries, higher-income countries should also increase their climate risk management,” the report said.

		+	Italy, Spain and Greece are the three EU nations which are among the 10 most affected countries worldwide over the past three decades. Dominica, China, Honduras, Myanmar and Italy are the top five most affected in the list of 1993-2022. The report comes days after WEF ranked extreme weather events amplified by climate change as the second most considerable global risk after armed conflict and war.

		+	New Delhi : Extreme weather events caused over 3,200 deaths in the country in 2024 — the warmest year on record in India, with lightning and thunderstorms taking the highest number of lives (1,374) followed by floods and heavy rains (1,287) and heat wave (459), shows the IMD Annual Climate Summary – 2024.

		+	Though Met department revealed the annual temperature rise figure a fortnight ago, stating 2024 as the hottest year since nationwide records began in 1901, its annual climate summary for the year disclosed how the regional variation in warming made the mean temperature rise in certain states/regions above the national average (+0.65° C above the long-term average).

		+	The report shows that the mean temperature rise over parts of HP, Uttarakhand, east MP, Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, south interior Karnataka, north interior Karnataka, madhya Maharashtra, Odisha, Bihar, Rayalaseema and Kerala & Mahe was above normal by about 1° Celsius. It means these me- teorological divisions reported higher temperature rise than national average of annual warming last year.

Winter (Jan-Feb) was warmer by 0.37 degree Celsius, pre- monsoon season (MarchMay) by 0.56 degree Celsius; monsoon (June-Sept) by 0.71 degree Celsius and post-monsoon season (Oct-Dec) by 0.83 degree Celsius — the warmest last three months since 1901.

		+	The stations/cities, which reported a new record in terms of hottest day include Churu (50.5° C), Ganganagar (49.4° C), Varanasi (47.8° Celsius), Gaya (47.4° C) and Sultanpur (47° C).

February was the warmest in 17 years, with the mean maximum temperature at 27. 7 degrees. March, on the other hand, was the wettest in four years and April witnessed fluctuations in temperature due to rainy days. Delhi has been reporting intense weather events this year.

		+	Though Met officials said weather conditions caused intense patterns and this could be linked to climate change only after studying the data of the past years, some experts said the extreme weather events drew attention to climate emergencies in future.

		+	India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) data shows that Safdarjung, the city’s base station, was the coldest in 11 years in January and saw one cold day and eight cold wave days, the highest in 15 years. The warmest February in 17 years saw no rain while the wettest March in four years logged 53. 2mm rainfall, making it relatively better than February. In April, parts of Delhi reported three heatwave days, but no such day at Safdarjung. At over 20mm rainfall, city experienced its wettest April in six years.

There is an impact of climate change, but the impact varies from place to place, season to season and year to year. We publish monthly and yearly reports on weather phenomena, but any phenomena occurring cannot be attributed to climate change. There should be a study or proof to connect it with climate change. ”

		+	He added, “In the country, heavy rain frequency has increased, light rain has decreased and heatwaves have increased, but that does not mean that every year there will be an increase in such events because there will be climate variability. ”

		+	Kuldeep Srivastava, scientist and head of Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, said local weather phenomena played an important role. “For instance, April saw more western disturbances than in the past few years. Every year cannot be the same and there is a decadal variation,” he added.

		+	However, professor A P Dimri, School of Environmental Science at JNU, said the changing weather pattern in Delhi could be linked to climate change. “Warming is happening globally to regional to local levels. The convection pattern is changing locally and extreme events like heatwaves and precipitation are rising. This is happening due to anthropogenic activities and emissions from various sources,” said Dimri. He added that researchers and policy-makers should consider changing the process of availability of energy.

The weather is more erratic. ” She added, “Even western disturbances were impacted this year, leading to untimely rain in March.
