The infernos continue to rage despite crores spent on mitigation and prevention. On May 28 alone, there were 94 forest fires spread over 161 hectares.

Since the formation of Uttarakhand in 2000, 44,518 hectares of forest land has been gobbled by fire. Yet, mitigation techniques have had little or no effect.
