		+	New Delhi : Mass animal sacrifice at Gadhimai festival in Nepal kept India’s border guarding force, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and administration across several districts in Bihar and UP on their toes, resulting in saving over 750 animals, including buffaloes and goats, from being slaughtered last week. The festival, nevertheless, witnessed the slaughter of 4,200 buffaloes at Gadhimai temple on Dec 8-9.

−	he temple trust's decision to stop the practice of animal T sacrifice at the annual Gadhimai festival is most welcome.Hopefully, it will also provoke others to introspect on whether sacrificing animals for religious rituals is in keeping with modern sensibilities and whether such practices are really intrinsic to their faith. Should religion be about celebrating and preserving life in all its myriad forms or should it treat some wanton destruction of life as acceptable? What would killings of animals have anything to do with devotion? These are the questions all those who still practice animal sacrifice in the name of religion need to ask themselves.

 Individual animals of five species are commonly sacrificed together in Nepal,  as is a person ritually shedding five drops of blood.  Coconuts,  however,  are sacrificed hundreds of times more often than animals,  even at the Dakshin Kali temple near Kathmandu,  for six centuries the most prominent sacrificial site in the country.  That the place where Gadhi Mai supposedly lived is marked with a coconut stone instead of an altar suggests that coconut sacrifice was historically the primary manner in which she was worshipped.

 At the Gadhimai Temple in 2009, five million people consumed 250,000 buffalo, sheep, goats and chickens, or an average of 0.05 of an animal (1/20th of an animal) per person.
