The original `Little Master' was known for his immaculate defensive technique and intense concentration that saw him playing many defiant innings in his team's cause. So classy was his batting that he easily became the most reliable batsman of his generation in the Pakistan team. For over three decades he held the record for the highest score in first-class cricket, the 499 which he scored for Karachi against Bahawalpur in 1958-59.

Hanif played 55 Tests, including Pakistan's first and scored 3915 runs at an average of 43.98. His best was an epic 337 as Pakistan saved the Barbados Test in 1958 while following on. At 970 minutes, it still remains the longest Test innings.However, on rare occasions when the situation and his mood allowed, he could switch gears and dominate the bowlers by playing all the strokes
