 The court also said that the 2017 amendment does not violate Articles 51-A (g) and 51-A (h), which impose duties on Indian citizens to protect the environment and develop a scientific temper, humanism, spirit of inquiry, and reform, respectively. Further, it also held that the amendment didn’t violate Articles 14 (Right to Equality) and 21 (Right to Life) of the Constitution.

 VELLORE: Around 100 bulls were made to run during the banned eruthu vidum vizha (bull race) at Vellakuttai in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu [during the annual Pongal festival]. One of the bulls ran into spectators and rammed Shanmugam.
 According to the complaint lodged by the victim's wife Kasthuri, Shanmugam was on his way to a temple in the vicinity when the bull attacked him.
 Like jallikattu (bull-taming), eruthu vidum vizha is also a traditional sport in Tamil Nadu that has been banned by the Supreme Court.

		+	Barely a week into the jallikattu season, three deaths have been reported — all of them outside the arena, and none of bull tamers — two were spectators and another a bull owner.

		+	Over the years, safety in jallikattu has meant ensuring a sport where animals are not tortured and bull tamers go in with as much preparation and medical backup as possible. Measures such as barricading the area around the ‘vadivasal’ from which the bulls charge at the tamers has helped make the game safer for the participants. Now it is the spectators who throng the bull collection points at the fag-end of the arena, away from the ‘vadivasal’ who are getting injured or killed. This shows lack of enough precautions outside the ring.

Of the 53 people hurt in the Avaniyapuram jallikattu in Madurai last Friday, 31 were spectators and those at the bull collection point, the place where the charging bulls at the end of the taming event are caught by the owners. It was in this area that 18-year-old T Balamurugan of Avaniyapuram lost his life after a bull’s horn pierced his chest. At present, there are no checks to control the crowd. There have been incidents of bulls going out of control and running for kilometres on the highways and into paddy fields and injuring motorists and just anyone in the recent years.

		+	S Arumugam of Alanganallur said bull tamers near the ‘vadivasal’ are cautious when the announcer says ‘suthu maadu’, meaning a bull is going to be released. “The tamers have the option to move away from the ‘vadivasal’ when they feel it is unsafe. But those at the bull collection point at the end of the barricades are unaware of the bull coming out after the event, as it is away from the ‘vadivasal’,” he said.

		+	In Trichy, a 29-year-old bull owner, G Meenatchi Sundaram, was the first casualty this year at Suriyur. He was gored to death by his own bull when he was leading it to the ‘vadivasal’. The second casualty was S Vinothkumar, 24, a spectator who was gored to death at the collection point by a bull rushing away from the ‘vadivasal’.
