=Jhalakati=&lt;br /&gt;

Town in the head-quarters subdivision of Backergunge &lt;br /&gt;
District, Eastern Bengal and Assam, situated in 22 degree 39' N. and &lt;br /&gt;
90 degree 13' E., at the junction of the Nalchiti river and the Jhalakati Khal. &lt;br /&gt;
Population (1901), 5,234. Jhalakati lies on the main steamer route &lt;br /&gt;
between Barisal and Calcutta, and is one of the most important markets &lt;br /&gt;
in Eastern Bengal, the chief exports being rice and betel-nuts, and the &lt;br /&gt;
imports salt, tobacco, oil, and sugar. A very large quantity of timber, &lt;br /&gt;
especially sundri wood (Heritiera littorslis), cut in the Sundarbans, is &lt;br /&gt;
sold here. There is an oil-mill with an annual out-turn estimated at &lt;br /&gt;
Rs. 25,000. Jhalakati was constituted a municipality in 1875. The &lt;br /&gt;
income during the decade ending 190 1-2 averaged Rs. 5,200, and &lt;br /&gt;
the expenditure Rs. 5,000. In 1903-4 the income was Rs. 8,8oo, &lt;br /&gt;
mainly derived from a property tax and a conservancy rate ; and the &lt;br /&gt;
