This tiny hamlet near Sanand may well be the largest conglomeration of women crorepatis in Gujarat. (A crorepati is a person with assets worth Rs 10 million/ $162,000 or more.) Of the 400-odd people who have become crorepatis overnight after the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation paid hefty compensation for land, a little less than 30% — 117 — are women.

In 2013 the GIDC distributed cheques worth Rs 850 crore (Rs8,500 million) to Khoraj villagers. Apart from the rags-to-riches stories which have emerged from the village, 40km from Ahmedabad, another factor standing out is the high number of women who had land in their names and got compensation ranging from Rs 1 crore to Rs 6 crore.

One such empowered woman has the freedom to use a large percentage of the money to give wings to her dream of becoming a woman agro-entrepreneur.

Some have a dream of owning a green house and running an agriculture processing unit.
Some have already identified land to invest the money as it is important to safeguard the money for future generations.

One widow who brought up two sons, wants to give her college-going son a SUV, and invest the money carefully so that she can educate and settle her children.

Within days of getting the payment 15 women of the village have put over Rs 1 crore each in their name in fixed deposits. Many even wish to spend for community and social welfare, building a community hall and constructing roads.
