Bhopal: Over four centuries after Mughal engineers taught an entire city to drink water without a single pump, Madhya Pradesh is preparing to make the impossible work again. In an unprecedented heritage engineering mission, the state has launched a scientific effort to revive Burhanpur’s Kundi Bhandara, a 400-year-old system that once solved a city’s water crisis and may now help solve a modern one.

Kundi Bhandara is a Unesco Tentative World Heritage Site — a landmark or area that a country has officially put on a waiting list to be considered for full World Heritage status.

Built around 1615 under Mughal governor Abdur Rahim Khan-i-Khana during the reign of Jahangir on the Persian qanat principle, the Kundi Bhandara network comprises more than 100 vertical shafts linked by nearly 4km of underground galleries that intercepted groundwater from Satpura hills and carried it across Burhanpur entirely by gravity — without pumps or electricity.

Parts of the system still survive despite centuries of neglect, encroachments and collapsed shafts. Recent visits found water continuing to flow beneath sections of the network, raising hopes that scientific restoration could revive larger stretches.
The state’s Directorate of Archaeology, Archives and Museums (DAAM) is spearheading the revival initiative. A study is being carried out by a multidisciplinary team from Bhopal’s govt-run Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), led by water resources professor Rutuja Chavan. Her team will use magnetic surveys and other non-destructive technologies to map hidden galleries, identify structural failures and prepare the first comprehensive revival blueprint.

“This is not a dead structure. The groundwater is still there and the engineering principles continue to work. Our study will establish how the network can be safely revived, so that this extraordinary system can once again serve people while preserving its historic character,” Chavan said.

Burhanpur collector Harsh Singh said the initiative could become a global benchmark in heritage-led sustainability. “Very few places in the world possess a living underground water system of this scale that still functions. Reviving it is about safeguarding an internationally significant heritage asset while enhancing its future water-carrying capacity. For many years, people in the area have not used this water, but we are sure after its revival, Kundi Bhandara will quench the thirst of many,” said the collector.

Calling it one of MP’s most important “living heritage” structures, DAAM joint director Manisha Sharma said the restoration will begin after a report from the MANIT experts. Sharma added that its revival could create a national model for heritage conservation.
