''Note: National, provincial and district boundaries have changed considerably since 1908. Typically, old states, ‘divisions’ and districts have been broken into smaller units, and many tahsils upgraded to districts. Some units have since been renamed. Therefore, this article is being posted mainly for its historical value. ''
situated in 13° 42' N. and 75° 38' E., on the Bhadra river, 13 miles
from Tarikere railway station. Population (190 1), 1,196. West of it
are vast forests on each side of the Bhadra, containing some of the
most valuable teak timber in the country. Close by is the site of
Ratnapuri, the ancient capital of Vajra Makuta Raya. Subsequently
included in the Humcha and Ganga territories, it afterwards formed
part of the Hoysala and A^ijayanagar kingdoms. The chiefs of Tari-
kere acquired it later, but were forced to yield it to Bednur, the
conquest of which by Haidar Ali in 1763 led to the absorption of
the country into Mysore.
