=Maddagiri=&lt;br /&gt;
North-eastern taluk of Tumkur District, Mysore, in- &lt;br /&gt;
cluding the Koratagere sub taluk and lying between 13° 27' and &lt;br /&gt;
13° 55' -N- and 77° 1' and 7 7° 2^' E., with an area of 606 square &lt;br /&gt;
miles. The population in 1901 was 1 16,695, compared with 97,973 &lt;br /&gt;
in 1 89 1. The idhik contains three tow-ns, Maddagiri (population, 4,060), &lt;br /&gt;
the head-quarters, Koratagere (2,811), and Holavaxhalli (1,682); &lt;br /&gt;
and 480 villages. The land revenue demand in 1903-4 Avas Rs. 2,27,000. &lt;br /&gt;
The Taluk is crossed from north to south by the lofty chain of moun- &lt;br /&gt;
tains which include Midagesidurga (3,414 feet), Maddagiridurga (3,935 &lt;br /&gt;
feet), and Channarayadurga (3,744 feet). The valleys west of the &lt;br /&gt;
range and south of Maddagiri are higher than the other parts of the &lt;br /&gt;
taluk. The open country to the north-east is principally watered by &lt;br /&gt;
the Jayamangali, and a small portion by the Kumadvati, both affluents &lt;br /&gt;
of the Penner, which flows near the boundary. The large Mavattur &lt;br /&gt;
tank has been formed in the south-east, in a very fertile tract, and is &lt;br /&gt;
