		+	A water dispute is simmering between Chhattisgarh and neighbouring Odisha with former constructing seven pick up weirs across river Mahanadi ,considered as lifeline of the state. Odisha government has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to stall the works while BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh maintains that the projects would not impact the neighbouring state.

		+	Raising strong objection over the dam projects across river Mahanadi, Odisha chief minister wrote to Modi on Monday last seeking his intervention saying that such constructions would adversely affect interests of their farmers. However, Chhattisgarh water resources minister Brijmohan Agrawal said there was no dispute between Chhattisgarh and Odisha. "The ongoing projects on river Mahanadi will cause no adverse impact on Hirakud dam," he said adding that this department would prepare a detailed report and apprise Odisha government about the facts.

		+	Describing Mahanadi as the lifeline of Odisha, Patnaik in his letter to PM maintained that it contributed maximum irrigation in state. Lives and livelihood of the farmers of 15 districts of Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundergarh, Bolangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Angul, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Puri, Nayagarh and Khurda are fully dependent on Mahanadi, he said in his letter adding that in fact River Mahanadi has a direct impact on more than 50% of Odisha's population and indirectly through subsidiaries the Mahanadi System has an impact on around 65% population of state.

		+	According to the letter, Odisha's people have an emotional, cultural and organic relationship with the Holy Mahanadi River. It is across Mahanadi that the first major multi-purpose river valley project of Odisha's Hirakud Dam was built between 1948 and 1957 and is considered as a Temple of Modern India.

		+	He said seven pick-up weirs across river Mahanadi just upstream of the Hirakud Dam and other projects will have severe adverse impact on flow of water in Hirakud Reservoir.
		+	In his strongly worded letter, Patnaik said that his state is shocked that a Central agency like the Central Water Commission has remained silent on this issue while they are supposed to be neutral and safeguard the interests of farmers of the riparian state.
