The index covering 36 states and UTs and 707 districts made by the Institute forCompetitiveness and Social Progress Imperative was submitted to the Economic Advisory CouncilPrime Minister (EAC-PM) and released in the Capital on Tuesday. Consequently, marriages with no possibility of suspicion regarding the virginity of the girl were considered most desirable. But 6 in 10 had said that they chose their partners “with” their parents. Did 2 in 10 then choose a husband “with” their parents without meeting the man? It’s hard to tell. Because there is an obvious explanation. Women’s agency. The age at which women get married has gone up from 16 to 19 in the past three decades. And while 65% women would get married by 18 till the 1990s, now, 40% do.
