FACILITY STATUS: Operational

The Pakistan Research Reactor 2 (PARR-2) is a 27-30KW miniature neutron-source (MNSR) research reactor located at and operated by the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH). Supplied by China in 1989, the PARR-2 is fueled by one kilogram of highly enriched uranium (HEU).

The PARR-2 has been used for radioisotope production, research in nuclear physics and nuclear engineering, and the training of nuclear reactor operators and students. Although the decision faced some domestic opposition, the PARR-2 was placed under IAEA safeguards. Pakistan's government argued that the decision was in conformity with the peaceful nature of Pakistan's nuclear program.
