(Pored) Town in the Ambalapulai taluk of Travancore &lt;br /&gt;
State, Madras, situated in 9 22' N. and 76 22' E. Population (1901), &lt;br /&gt;
2,264. Formerly the head-quarters of the Chempakasseri Rajas, it &lt;br /&gt;
passed to Travancore in 1748. It was once a notable port, but &lt;br /&gt;
declined with the rise of Alleppey. The Portuguese, and after them &lt;br /&gt;
the Dutch, had settlements here. &lt;br /&gt;
