=Proddatur Taluk, 1908=&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Northern taluk of Cuddapah District, Madras, &lt;br /&gt;
lying between 14 degree 36' and 15 degree 2' N. and 78degree 26' and 78 53' E., with &lt;br /&gt;
an area of 478 square miles. The Nallamalai Hills form a natural &lt;br /&gt;
frontier on the east, while in the south the tract is bounded by the &lt;br /&gt;
Cuddapah taluk and the Penner river. The population in 1901 was &lt;br /&gt;
102,570, compared with 98,418 in 1891. It contains one town, &lt;br /&gt;
PRODDATUR (population, 14,370), the head-quarters; and 86 villages. &lt;br /&gt;
The demand for land revenue and cesses in 1903-4 amounted to &lt;br /&gt;
Rs. 2,58,000. Owing to its fertile black soil, Proddatur is the most &lt;br /&gt;
densely peopled taluk in the District, its population, who are mainly &lt;br /&gt;
Telugus, numbering 215 per square mile, compared with an average of &lt;br /&gt;
148 for the District as a whole. 'Cuddapah slabs' are much used for &lt;br /&gt;
building. About one-fourth consists of ' reserved ' forest, most of &lt;br /&gt;
which lies on the Nallamalais. The KURNOOL-CUDDAPAH CANAL &lt;br /&gt;
traverses it. Cotton is the principal product. There are no manu- &lt;br /&gt;
factures except indigo. &lt;br /&gt;
