Bhopal: Nearly 1,800 years ago, a Malava (ancient Indian community) sculptor gave Goddess Saraswati an instrument — a sweeping, arched, harp-like veena. Today, that tiny black sandstone idol is emerging as a document on ancient Indian music.

Found at Manasa in Neemuch in the 1980s, the 30 x 27 x 8 cm sculpture has been in Ujjain Museum for decades. Catalogued simply as ‘78’, it drew fresh attention when archaeology commissioner Madan Kumar visited the museum recently and curator Yogesh Pal pointed it out.

Archaeology dept then undertook an iconographic survey of Saraswati sculptures in MP museums. The conclusion: the sculpture belongs to Malava era and dates to second century CE. The survey also points out it is the oldest Saraswati idol found in MP with a musical instrument.
