Yesteryears film heroine Shyama's vim and spontaneity lit up song sequences in Guru Dutt’s breezy crime yarn, Aar Paar (1953), and AVM productions' weepy social, Bhai Bhai (1956).

Shyama acted in at least 140 movies essaying lead parts, character roles and blink-and-miss parts. She is most remembered for her role in Bhabhi (1957) and Chhoti Bahen (1960). Her lone Filmfare Award as Best Supporting Actress was for her performance in Sharada (1957) .
