''<br /> <br /> Coast taluk in the south-east of Tanjore <br /> District, Madras, lying between 10° 16 degree and 10° 40' N. and 79° 28' <br /> and 79° 52' E., with an area of 485 square miles. The population <br /> in 1901 was 182,981, compared with 179,485 in 1891. The taluk <br /> contains 143 villages, besides three towns : Tirutturaippundi (popu- <br /> lation, 5,400), the head-quarters ; Vedaranniyam (14,138), at the <br /> north-eastern end of the great salt swamp of that name, containing <br /> a large salt factory. It is connected with Negapatam by the Veda- <br /> ranniyam Canal. About 10 miles south of it is Point Calimere. <br /> Muttupet (population, 9,099), to the .south-west on the Koraiyar <br /> river, has all the advantages of a port, although it stands about <br /> 6^ miles from the mouth of the river. The demand for land revenue <br /> and cesses in 1903-4 amounted to Rs. 5,09,000. Part of the taluk <br /> is in the Cauvery delta, but it contains no alluvial soil and the land <br /> is generally of an inferior kind. Half of the ' dry ' fields are assessed <br /> at Rs. 1.4 an acre or less, and the taluk is a poor tract compared <br /> with most of the others in this District. Education is also backward <br /> and the population is sparse. Tobacco and coco-nuts are largely <br /> grown, and the latter, and also rice, are exported in considerable <br /> quantities.</div>
