Apart From Amethi, Will Also Contest Kerala Seat
Congress formally announced on Sunday that Rahul Gandhi would contest from Wayanad in Kerala, besides his traditional stronghold of Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The party said the move was intended to strike a chord with south India, but it attracted a hostile reaction from the Left.
TOI had predicted that Rahul would contest from Wayanad in its edition dated March 24.
Congress said the decision to contest from a second seat was dictated by the need to express solidarity with the southern region, whose “culture and lifestyle has come under attack” under the BJP government. The decision to pick a seat with a significant number of Christian and Muslim voters was also seen as a signal to minorities.
Congress countered BJP’s claim that Rahul’s decision stemmed from concern about his prospects in Amethi, with A K Antony saying he had decided to contest from Kerala following requests from the state unit, besides the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka units.
The decision, however, cast a cloud over “secular unity” against BJP as Left leaders asked what signal Congress was sending by picking a seat where the main rival was CPM and not the saffron party. CPM leader Prakash Karat said the Left would do its best to defeat the Congress president.
Congress believes that its chief pitching his poll tent in the south after years of being identified with the north will help it galvanise voters in three states that account for 87 Lok Sabha seats.
