The Modi wave notwithstanding, Odisha on Friday wrote a different electoral story as Naveen Patnaik-led BJD headed for a landslide win in the state in the Lok Sabha elections.

At the time of filing, BJD candidates in at least 20 LS seats had surged far ahead of their nearest rivals. In 11 constituencies, the main fight was with Congres while in the rest, BJP was a contender.

Prominent BJD candidates, sure of winning, included sitting MPs Baijayant Panda (Kendrapada), Tathagata Satpathy (Dhenkanal), Bhartruhari Mahatab (Cut tack), Pinaki Mishra (Puri) Prasanna Patsani (Bhuba neswar), Kalikesh Singhdeo (Balangir), Sidhanta Moha patra (Berhampur) and Ar jun Sethi (Bhadrak).

BJD fielded 11 new faces Amongst them, Ladu Kish ore Swain (Aska) was poised for victory with a huge mar gin of over 1.5 lakh.

Dillip Tirkey (Sundar garh), RS MP , was the only BJD candidate who lost to BJP's Jual Oram though marginally

Others who had established comfortable leads included Rabindra Jena (Balasore) Pravas Singh (Bargarh), Arka Keshari Deo (Kalahandi), Hemendra Chandra Singh (Kandhamal), Rama Chandra Hansda (Mayurbhanj), Rita Tarai (Jajpur), Nagendra Pradhan (Sambalpur), Jhina Hikaka (Koraput), Sakuntala Laguri (Keonjhar) and Kulamani Samal (Jagatsinghpur).

Naveen sweeps state poll, stays ahead of BJP in close LS race

In between celebrations at retaining power in Odisha for the fifth successive term, the Lok Sabha results can come as a bit of a dampener for the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD. Till 11.30 pm, BJD was leading in 13 of the 21 seats with BJP ahead in 8, quite a leap from the one seat it had in the last polls. The saffron outfit also made a huge jump in vote share, up from 21.5% in 2014 to 38.4 % as per the trends. The Congress was leading in the Koraput Lok Sabha seat.

The result is significant, given that even during the Narendra Modi wave in 2014, Naveen’s party had managed to check the BJP march in the state. While the BJD maintained its dominance in coastal and southern Odisha, BJP did comparatively well in western and northern parts of the state. BJP candidates were leading in Kalahandi, Balangir, Bargarh, Sundargarh and Sambalpur in western Odisha besides Balasore and Mayurbhanj in the north. Its candidate, former bureaucrat Aparajita Sarangi, was also ahead in Bhubaneswar.

Naveen’s decision to field one-third women candidates for the Lok Sabha elections also brought him rich dividends as six of them were leading in their respective seats. Pramila Bisoyi, a Class II dropout and grass-roots level worker associated with a self-help group, was fielded by Naveen from Aska, from where he had started his political career in 1997. At the time of this report going to press, Pramila was leading by over 1.8 lakh votes against her nearest rival, Anita Subhadarshini of the BJP.

In an attempt to stop the BJP surge, Naveen had contested from Bijepur assembly segment, which is part of the Bargarh Lok Sabha seat. But this could not help much in the parliamentary election as BJP is leading in Bargarh, as well as from Balangir, Kalahandi, Sundargarh and Sambalpur LS seats.

Days before the elections, Subash Chauhan, BJP’s 2014 LS candidate from Bargarh, had quit the party. The move was seen as a setback to BJP. But Suresh Pujari proved sceptics wrong as he is leading against BJD stalwart Prasanna Acharya, a current Rajya Sabha member. However, BJP’s decision to recruit former BJD parliamentarian Baijayant Panda and the party’s sitting MP Balabhadra Majhi failed to earn them the desired results. While Baijayant was trailing by over one lakh votes against BJD’s actor-turned politician Anubhav Mohanty in Kendrapada, Balabhadra is way behind in third place in Nabarangpur. BJD’s Ramesh Chandra Majhi is leading there against Pradeep Kumar Majhi of Congress.

State BJP president Basanta Panda said: “From one LS seat in 2014, the BJP has made a quantum leap.”

Naveen took the opportunity to thank the people. “I am glad to express my deep gratitude to the people of our state who have showered their blessings,” he said.
