A nation’s dreams may have soared with Neeraj Chopra’s javelin in Tokyo, but Razia Sheikh felt a spear through her heart in that very moment of joy as she contemplated her own life as a past champion in the sport.
The 62-year-old Vadodara resident Razia Sheikh had been living an obscure life full of everyday struggles when a fellow athlete’s biggest moment on the greatest stage brought back a gush of bitter-sweet memories. “I was in tears when I heard that Neeraj had won a gold in javelin — a sport that used to be my life,” said Razia, the first woman from India to cross the 50-metre barrier in javelin at the 1987 South Asian Federation Games.
