Ten devotees were killed and 70 injured in a stampede at Baba Baidyanath Dham temple in Deoghar in Jharkhand, where thousands of pilgrims had queued up to offer water at the shivalinga on the second somvar, coinci ding with ekadashi, both con sidered auspicious for Hin dus. A communique from the state headquarters said the stampede occurred when a group of kanwariyas tried to force themselves forward.

Although district adminis tration and senior cops re mained tight-lipped on what caused the stampede, eyewit nesses alleged that erratic be haviour of security personnel controlling the crowd and darkness were behind the tragedy . Sources said the stampede took place at Belabagan, 10 km from the temple premises, be tween 3:30 and 4am when a po liceman used his stick to dis perse the kanwariays heading towards the temple premises.

Local MLA Narayan Das said, “The police constables who manage the crowd are not trained to handle crowd.They do not know how to behave with devotees and do not understand their mood.“

A cop told TOI on conditions of anonymity: “These constables do not emphathize with devotees and end up creating chaos. The skirmishes between devotees and police are reported everyday .“ Another cop said: “Devotees started queuing from Belbagan to the temple premises around 2:30am. Within an hour, there were three parallel queues.The gathering became restless because of the darkness and potholes on the lane.“

CM Raghubar Das constituted an inquiry under additional chief secretary NN Pandey and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those killed and an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 each for the injured.
