Lalbiakkima’s father is asthmatic and does not keep good health. His mother sells fish in the local market to feed the family.
2009-16
Pro fights are a popular recreational sport in Mizoram and it was in one of these fights that Lalbiakkima was exposed to boxing for the very first time in 2009 [at age 18].
2011: Lalbiakkima was selected at the Mizoram Regional Sports Authority Centre.
2012: he started staying at the Centre’s hostel, where he was trained.
2017
2017: played at the Senior Nationals in Vishakhapatnam where he won a bronze. This was his turning point.
His performance was observed by Mr Santiago and Mr SR Singh.He was called for the trials for Indian team in Patiala. (First Post writes that the year was 2015.)
His attacking play was something which impressed the Navy coaches and he was selected to join the [Indian] Navy in 2015. Since then Lalbiakkima lives and trains in Navy Nagar, Mumbai
Thereafter he started training under the 2010 CWG Gold medallist Suranjoy Singh, who is the Chief Coach in the Indian Navy.
Lalbiakkima attributes his success and style of boxing to his idol Suranjoy.
2018
Lalbiakkima lost to Amit Panghal in the India Open semi-finals in New Delhi in February in the light flyweight category. He was therefore not sent to Gold Coast.
Beats world no. 1 Dusmatov, but settles for bronze
Nutlai Lalbiakkima beat world number 1 and Olympic gold medalist Hasanboy Dusmatov at the President’s Cup in Kazakhastan in June 2017. He won 4-1 in the quarterfinals, in the 49kg category.
Lalbiakkima got the opportunity to contest in this tournament as AIBA’s youth world champion Sachin Siwach had moved up to the flyweight (52kg) class.
Lalbiakkima later said that he went through all the videos of Dusmatov’s bouts to prepare for the contest.
However, he settled for a bronze medal when he lost to the local favourite Erzhan Zhomart at the semi-final stage.
