The Bhiwani boxer (born 1986) was the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal. His bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics inspired an entire generation of Indians to take to the ring

Vijender has had an illustrious career in amateur boxing, winning at least one medal [each] at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, World Championships and Olympics. He was also rated the world No. 1 middleweight boxer (75kg category) in 2009.

Vijender won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games

He is reported to be set to join the professional ranks as a heavyweight pugilist Gurcharan Singh Nagra, who finished fourth at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, had also turned pro soon after.

In June 2015 Vijender Singh bid adieu to his amateur career by turning professional, thus ruling himself out of the 2016 Olympics.

At age 29 he signed a multi-year agreement with Queensberry Promotions through IOS Sports and Entertainment, that will see the middleweight fight a minimum of six times in the first year. this required him to shift base to Manchester, England, under renowned trainer Lee Beard, who has previously worked with British boxing legend Ricky Hatton.

Vijender was also the country's first to win a medal at the World Championships when he clinched a bronze in 2009.

He won a gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games besides silver medals at the 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games; a bronze at the 2006 Asian Games and the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

It went the distance, all 10 rounds of it, but Vijender prevailed on points by a unanimous decision -98-92, 98-92, 100-90 -to register his seventh pro victory in as many fights.By winning this WBO Asia Pacific Championship super middleweight title, Vijender now gets a direct entry into world top 15 and has become eligible for a world title fight.

The Bhiwani boxer, who had six knockouts from as many fights before Saturday night, got into some serious business in the second round throwing limited yet accurate punches at his Australian opponent's face.

Vijender in trouble over acting stint

Olympic medal-winning boxer Vijender Singh finds himself in a fresh bout of controversy . Information acquired through an RTI query has revealed that the pugilist, who is employed as a probationer deputy superintendent of police (DSP) with Haryana police, had acted in Bollywood movie `Fugly' and some other TV serials and commercials without taking prior permission or leave from his department head. The RTI was filed by Hisar-based activist Naresh Kumar who sought copies of permission granted to Vijender and cricketer Joginder Sharma for working in television commercials. However, the information officer of Haryana Police expressed inability to provide details about rules related to government employees earning money without per mission from their respective departments.

Police officials replied that no government employee can engage himself in other avocation except the actual service. The response also made it clear that both the players -Vijender and Joginder -were never given any kind of permission for shooting.

Speaking to TOI, Naresh Kumar, the RTI activist, said, “Normally a government employee requires prior permission from the parent department before indulging in any commercial activity . Besides, he or she is also required to deposit salary for the period that they have worked in relation to that commercial activity .“

Kumar added that he has sought further information from the police related to other sportspersons who have been given government jobs through sports quota.

Vijender is tenth in latest WBO rankings

Indian boxer Vijender Singh broke into the World Boxing Organisation's (WBO) rankings at 10th after being crowned its Asia Pacific super middleweight champion. Vijender, who beat former WBC European champion Kerry Hope to win the title in a gruelling 10-round contest, has been unbeaten since he turned professional last year, recording seven straight wins -six of them knockouts.

The Indian is placed above rising American star Trevor McCumby , who is also undefeated in the circuit with 22 wins, 17 of them knockouts.

Vijender Singh demolished Ghana’s former Commonwealth champion Charles Adamu to claim his 12th successive win and ensure that his four-year unbeaten streak in the professional circuit remained intact.

The 34-year-old former Olympic bronze-medallist, who holds the WBO Asia Pacific and Oriental super middleweight belts, prevailed in a unanimous verdict in an eight-round contest against the 42-yearold Adamu on Friday night. The Indian’s right hand was just too precise and powerful to handle for Adamu, who looked intimidated, kept a shell guard, and was thrown off-balance more than once. PTI
