Ranchi : Indian women’s hockey team forward Lalremsiami is set to become the first sportsperson from Mizoram to receive the Arjuna Award, according to sources. Popularly known as ‘Siami’, she made her senior debut in 2017 during a Test series against Belarus. Since then, she has played 177 international matches and scored 67 goals.


A major milestone in her career came at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where India reached the semifinals under coach Sjoerd Marijne. Siami’s late father had wanted to see her play at the Olympics, but he died in 2019 when she was playing at the Hockey Series Finals in Hiroshima. She continued in the tournament and later went on to make history in Tokyo, becoming the first woman athlete from Mizoram to compete at the Games.


She has also represented India at two Commonwealth Games, winning bronze in Birmingham. She has been part of the teams that won a silver and a bronze at the Asian Games and has competed in two World Cups. At junior level, she won a silver at the third Youth Olympic Games in 2018 and was named the FIH Rising Star of the Year in 2019.


Siami began training at the SAI Hockey Centre in Thenzawl, Mizoram, under coach Miss Btei. She is currently playing in the Women’s Hockey India League for Shrachi Bengal Tigers.

Kolkata: Indian women’s hockey international Lalremsiami became the first athlete from Mizoram to be selected for the prestigious Arjuna Award after the list for 2025 was unveiled by the sports ministry.

Having made her senior debut in 2017, the 26-year-old has been a mainstay of the national team, playing a pivotal role in major tournaments, including India’s fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics under coach Sjoerd Marijne. She was also named FIH Rising Star of the Year in 2019.

As recently as the Nations Cup in June, Siami produced a player-of-the-match performance in the final as India beat New Zealand.

Perhaps happiest to see Lalremsiami selected for the Arjuna was her long-time coach, Miss B’tei, who trained her during her early days at SAI Training Centre in Thenzawl. “I identified her potential and believed that she would one day represent the country. She is a very hardworking and dedicated athlete,” coach B’tei told TOI.

Siami’s rise to the national team has already made a difference in football-mad Mizoram, with several youngsters taking up hockey and subsequently making their way to National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs) across the country.
