JANNAT PATEL 32 FIRST TO FILE A CASE UNDER TRIPLE TALAQ LAW
‘I will not back off from the legal fight’
Hours after the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 popularly known as the triple talaq law was enforced in August this year, 32-year-old Jannat Patel summoned the courage to lodge a FIR in Maharashtra’s Mumbra police station against her husband Imtiaz Patel, a sales executive in Abu Dhabi, who had given her talaq on WhatsApp while she was pregnant with their first child. With that FIR, Jannat walked into the headlines. But five months later, she has realised that the struggle for justice isn’t easy. While her husband has got anticipatory bail, she has to support herself financially and take care of her baby boy. “It has been very difficult to continue the legal fight without any support. We manage with my father’s income. My husband has not seen his son even once,” says Jannat. But thoughts of giving up are not on her mind. “I will not back off. It would be so easy to just withdraw my complaint but I hope I will get justice,” she says.
