Pune retains top position

Savitribai Phule Pune University consolidated their position at the top by claiming three gold medals at the inaugural Khelo India University Games. Mahesh Datta Asawale and Prajkta Ravindra

Khalkar won gold in weightlifting competition, while Jyotiba Bajrang Atkale bagged a yellow metal in wrestling. Panjab University (Chandigarh) and Jain University (Bengaluru) remained on eight gold medals each, while with 13 golds, Pune University surged ahead. Guru Nanak Dev University (Amritsar) and University of Mumbai complete the top five on the charts. Mahesh Asawale, who won the All-India Inter-University Championships in Mohali last December with total lifts of 258kg, showed an improvement here. He lifted 123kg in snatch and 143 in clean and jerk for a total of 266kg. PTI

Bengaluru: Hosts Jain University, powered by swimmer Siva Sridhar’s collection of 7 gold and two silver, overcame astrong challenge from Lovely Professional University, Punja b, to win the overall championship as the curtain came down on the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) with a colourful closing ceremony. The 10-day action, which featured up coming stars and a few seasoned campaigners, saw Jain emerge on top of the m edals table with 20 g old, seven silver and five bronze. Lovely had a higher number of medals — 51 (17 gold, 15 silver, 19 bronze) against Jain’s 32 but the gold medal count did them in. Defending champions Panjab University finished third (15 gold, 9 silver, 24 bronze). Union home minister Amit Shah, who was the chief guest at the closing ceremony, gave away the trophies to the three Universities. Sridhar (men’s 200m IM) and Ann Mariya MT (women' weightlifting) set new national marks. Swimmer Shrungi Bandekar, four gold and one silver, emerged as the most successful female athlete at the games. Shah also felicitated the Indian men’ s and women’s hockey teams which won the bronze medal and finished fourth respectively at the Tokyo Olympics. Skippers Manpreet Singh and Rani Rampal led the squads on to the stage.

“I congratulate hosts Jain University, the Karnataka government for hosting a successful Games in Bengaluru. Jain not only successfully hosted it but also topped the medals tally,” the minister sai d. Shah also had a special word of praise for Chenraj Roychand, founder-chairman of the Jain group. “PM Narendra Modi has develo- ped a roadmap to ensure that by 2047, when India celebrates i ts 100th Independence Day, India would be among the top five nations at the Olympics," he said.

Also present during the ceremony was Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai, Union sports minister A nurag Singh Thakur and state sports minister Narayan Gowda. Cine actor Kicha Sudeep also attended the ceremony. Mangalore, BCU shine

Two other universities from Karnataka – Mangalore and Bengaluru City University (BCU) — also showed their class in the prestigious meet that has given thousands of competitors fr om across the country the feel of a mini-Olympics.

While Mangalore excelled in athletics, dominating across categories, BCU boys defended their men’s hockey gold that saw eye-catching performance from striker Harish Mutagar.
