Vandan Alankar Sawai won three of the four games he played on Aug 18. Then he simply walked into the next room and told his parents he was done for the night. There was no celebration, no excited retelling of the games, and no mention that one of those three victories had come against World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in 50 moves.
The 15-year-old had returned from Europe with his mother just two days earlier after a month-and-a-half-long trip for a chess tournament and was still tired and jet-lagged. It was only when his father, former banker Alankar Sawai, opened his Chess.com profile that the family realised what had happened.
“He just came into the room and said, ‘I’m done with my four rounds. That’s it,’” his mother, Dr Madhuri Alankar Sawai, recalled. “My husband opened his profile to see the games and suddenly asked him, ‘You played against Magnus! And you won?’”
