Bhopal : An armed gang of 25 to 30 men allegedly stormed the centuries-old ASIprotected Narwar Fort in MP’s Shivpuri district and stole a rare 16th-century cannon weighing more than 1,000kg after threatening unarmed security guards.
The cannon, stolen on the intervening night of July 15 and 16, was one of the 14 historic artillery pieces displayed in the fort’s open courtyard.
The heist has revived memories of a similar theft in 2007, when another historic Mughal-era cannon, measuring about 7 feet in length and weighing nearly 3,000kg, was stolen from the fort’s Kachahari Mahal premises.
The historic hill fort is associated in local tradition with Kush, the son of Lord Ram, and the legendary king Nala and his wife Damayanti.
According to security guards, the gang entered the monument through a rugged rear approach on loading vehicles, brought on purpose to transport the massive cannon.
