Born into a zamindar family, he abandoned his studies in 1942 to join the Quit India movement. In 1943, he joined the Communist Party of India and moved to Bombay. With his brilliant poetry and beautiful lyrics for films, he ranked among the greatest Urdu poets of the 20th century
