Prayagraj : A literary tribute to the Sangam City, ‘Jeete Jee Allahabad’, has fetched the Sahitya Akademi Award for its author, Mamta Kalia. The announcement came as a surprise to the 86-year-old writer, who discovered the news only after seeing the official list of awardees. She will receive the honour in Delhi on March 31.
“It is one of the happiest moments of my life, as the book and the city hold a special place in my heart, capturing memories, friendships, and personal experiences associated with it,” said Kalia, former editor of the quarterly English journal, ‘Hindi’, published by Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University.
The writer recalled her deep connection with Prayagraj, where she lived with her husband, noted litterateur Ravindra Kalia, from 1970 to 2000, with both contributing immensely to its literary landscape.
During her time in the city, Kalia taught at Mahila Seva Sadan Degree College and remained actively engaged in literary circles.
Mamta Kalia’s memoir vividly captures the cultural and intellectual life of Allahabad (now Prayagraj), weaving together personal recollections and the city’s vibrant ethos. She said the book originated from a request by a literary magazine to write about the erstwhile Allahabad. What began as an article gradually evolved into a full-length memoir.
Describing the city as warm, humorous and deeply alive, she noted that these qualities permeate her writing. Now based in Ghaziabad, she admitted she continues to miss the city.
