Suri Subdivision, 1908

Southern subdivision of Birbhum District, Bengal, lying between 23° 33' and 24" 7' N. and 87° 10' and 87° 58' E., with an area of 1,107 square miles. The eastern part of the subdivision presents the appearance of the ordinary alluvial plains of Lower Bengal ; but towards the west the ground rises, and this portion consists of a rolling country with undulating uplands of laterite. The popula- tion in 1901 was 535,928, compared with 470,229 in 1891, the density being 4S4 persons per square mile. It contains one town, Suri (popu- lation, 8,692), the head-quarters ; and 1,981 villages.
