Marriage
Anushka getting married after Mahaabali
Janani Karthik,TNN | Sep 17, 2014
The Times of India has it on good authority that in 2014 a debutant director met Anushka at the shooting spot of Lingaa (2014) and narrated to her a script. The script was a heroine-centric one, and Anushka loved it. And yet, she did not accept the offer. The reason she gave the director was not the usual one actors dish out of not having dates. In this case, the actress reportedly refused the offer as she's getting married after the shoot of Mahaabali and has no plans to work on any film after marriage.
A source in the know says, "It was only because of her marriage plans that she politely declined to work in this film, though she liked the director's script very much. Anushka will be settling down after her shoot for Rajamouli's film is over."
Anushka's husband-to-be, apparently, is not from the film industry, but a businessman. The actress was in 2014 working on Lingaa (2014) with Rajinikanth, Mahaabali and Rudhramadevi.
Career
2005: Anushka debuted in Super, with major Telugu leading man Akkineni Nagarjuna. Director Puri Jagannadh happened to see Anushka through another director and she got selected for “Super.” Hindi-Urdu actress Ayesha Takia was the other female lead. Sandeep Chowta’s Music was nominated for the Filmfare Best Music Director Award; the songs were major hits.
Anushka excelled as Sasha, who is madly in love with her girlfriend’s brother, Akhil, an unemployed youth. Now Akhil does not have any romantic feelings for Sasha. He thinks of her only as a friend. The film flopped but Anushka got noticed in this role about unrequited love. She was offered more leading assignments.
She performed the role of Sasha beautifully, who is madly in love with the unemployed hero Akhil, played by Nagarjuna. He doesn't have any romantic feelings for Sasha, his sister's friend, and treats her only as a friend.
Though this was Anushka’s debut film, she was paid Rs20 lakh, which was good by any standards.
2005: She also did ‘Mahanandi’ but the film did not do well at the box office.
2006 was a very productive year for Shetty. She had four releases.
‘Vikramarkudu’ (dir S.S. Rajamouli; music by MM Keeravani): Shetty played Neeraja Goswami. The film saw her acting skills being praised by the critics. Leading man Ravi Teja for the first time acted in a double role: he played a petty thief as well as a police officer. The film was a mega hit. With this film Anushka became one of the biggest Telugu stars: the film got her commercial success as well as critical acclaim. The film was remade in Malayalam as Vikramathithya.
Vikramarkudu was to have been remade in Tamil as ‘Siruthai,’ and to be directed by Suraj. Anushka was to have been the lady love of Karthik Shivakumar. Yuvan Shankar Raja was to have scored the music for the film. However, producers Studio Green dropped the project. They revived it in 2010 with Siva as director and Tamannah as heroine.
2006: Asthram (a remake of the successful Aamir Khan-starrer ‘Sarfarosh’)
2006: ‘Rendu’ (dir: Sundar C), opposite R. Madhavan, was her debut film in Tamil. It was a mild success but not a hit.
2006: Anushka had a special guest appearance in ‘Stalin,’ which saw the directorial debut of A.R. Murugadoss, who went on to become a major director in the Tamil industry
2007: Lakshyam was the no.1 Telugu hit of the year. It was Srivasu’s first film as director and Tottempudi Gopichand played the hero. Anushka was praised for her acting as a cheerful college student who teases the hero outside her home, but is a sensitive girl at home.
2007 ‘Don’ was a very prestigious project for writer, director, choreographer and music director Raghava Lawrence. Once again, Shetty played the main lead opposite Nagarjuna and won acclaim. The film was dubbed into Malayalam as Bhai and into Hindi as Don No. 1. Raghava Lawrence himself d the film and also made his debut as a.
2008 saw Anushka’s career reach new heights with six releases.
‘Okka Magaadu’: Anushka’s performance as a glamour girl was appreciated. In the film she also sang a song (Ammatho), in her own voice, with Naveen. She played one of three female leads.
Swagatam (dir: Dasaradh) was a big-budget film (with Jagapathi Babu as the hero and Bhumika Chawla as Anushka’s rival in love). Anushka played Shailu, an irritable businesswoman who falls in love with a widower who helps her find new meaning in life. The film was not a commercial success. However, it was received very well by the critics—who praised Dasaradh, Jagapathi Babu and Bhoomika. The film did nothing for Shetty—except for getting her poor reviews.
Chintakayala Ravi (dir Yogesh) was a comedy and Shetty, who played Sunitha, was one of the two leading ladies. Much of the film was shot in the USA and Vishal-Shekhar (major composers from Hindi-Urdu cinema) composed the hit music.
Baladhoor (with Ravi Teja), too, was neither a commercial nor a critical success. Anushka slimmed down for the film, and the director and choreographer of the film thought that if she showed skin the film would be a success. However, the film had a clichéd story, bad direction, lifeless music--and high expectations on the part of the audience, from both Anushka, by then a major star, and Ravi Teja, who had never before delivered such a flop. Anushka’s cheesecake could not attract audiences.
‘Souryam’ (hero: Tottempudi Gopichand) did very well but was not as successful as their previous, Lakshyam.
‘Arundhati’ (directed by Kodi Ramakrishna; produced by M Shyama Prasad Reddy) was a mega hit and changed Anushka’s career forever. She had the double roles of Arundhati and Jejamma in this heroine-oriented fantasy film. More than the title role, it was her performance as Jejamma that got her rave reviews and Awards. The critics hailed a new acting talent. Many major awards came her way. Graphics by Rahul Nambiar left Indian audiences impressed; they had rarely seen technical excellence. Together all this made the film a hit and took Shetty’s career to the very top.
Anushka was now getting Rs.1 crore per film, and acting opposite superstars. She was already one of the highest paid South Indian actresses.
‘Billa’ too received commercial and critical success. Her sizzling performance outshone the ‘buxom bombshell’ Namitha, the other heroine of the film. Anushka was now a ‘bankable’ star. She could effortlessly fit into big- budget as well as serious films.
Anushka’s popularity vis-à-vis other leading ladies was getting embarrassing fortheir hosts. Around this time Anushka and Namitha appeared together on a TV show. Most callers to the TV station wanted to talk to Anushka rather than Namitha. This is said to have got Namitha worried, and she started working on reducing her waistline.
2009: ‘Vettaikkaran’ (prod: AVM Balasubramanian; dir: Babu Sivan) was her second Tamil film; she was paired with the successful Tamil star Ilayathalapathy Vijay. She played a medical student. Tamanna Bhatia was the other heroine.
2010: This year, too, Anushka had major success.
‘Singam’ (Tamil), opposite Suriya, was the biggest commercial success of the year. The film cemented her position in Tamil cinema.
Vedam: Anushka Shetty played Saroja, a prostitute. Such roles normally bring acting awards, and Shetty got her second Filmfare Award as well as another CineMAA Award.
Panchakshari (Telugu), another heroine-centric film in which she had a double-role.
Khaleja: Anushka’s performance was appreciated.
Ragada: Anushka’s performance was appreciated.
2011 Vaanam was another film that brought in commercial success as well as critical praise.
Deiva Thirumagal was a major hit.
By now Anushka had become a major name in Tamil films as well. She started receiving offers for some of the biggest-budget films being made. A.R. Murugadoss cast her in his next film opposite Vijay.
Then she signed two major Tamil films – Irandam Ulagam (opposite Arya) and an action film with Karthi (she kept the name a secret). In November 2011 she started working in the Tamil ‘Thaandavam’. Two Telugu films followed– Damarukam and Rampachodavaram.
Surprisingly she opted out of Bala Krishna’s ‘ Okka Magadu’ for ‘personal reasons.’
2013: the action-romantic flick "Mirchi" was a block buster hit.
2014: Lingaa (2014) , the most eagerly awaited Tamil film till then, was a success and rewrote some commercial records. However, there were comments about whether there was any chemistry at all between her and leading man, megastar Rajinikanth.

Long back it was declared that Anushka and Ajith will come together for Gautham Menon's next. As per the goss the film is titled as Sathya". However, the latest talk is that the film isn't actually titled Sathya. In fact, it is being referred to as 'Thala 55' by Ajith's fans. The film is going on progress but the details are kept under the wraps. It seems the filmmakers are planning to keep the film name secret until the release of the flick. The shooting of the movie has also started in April and the lead actors Ajith and Anushka have been called to a 'secret' location along with the cameraman and a couple of light men.
