Tasgaon Town

Head-quarters of the taluka of the same name in Satara District, Bombay, situated in 17° 2' N. and 74° 36' E., on the Southern Mahratta Railway. Population (1901), 10,975. The town stands on rising ground, on the north bank of a stream which flow^s into the Yerla about 4 miles to the south-west. It was originally surrounded by walls, now ruined, and was entered by four gates. Within stands the mansion of the Patvardhan family, likewise enclosed by walls and three fortified gates, of which the northernmost was blocked up in 1799 on the death of Parasu Rama Bhau, the greatest of the Patvardhans. A fine temple of Ganpati, about a century old, stands at a little distance from the mansion. The municipality, con- stituted in 1867, had an average income during the decade ending 1901 of Rs. 7,800. In 1903-4 the income was Rs. 7,700. The town contains a Subordinate Judge's court, an English school, and a dispensary.
