A profile

India Today

Outside the BJP fold, he is Narendra Modi's most important point man in building new alliances- a key interlocutor responsible for bringing in Chandrababu Naidu's TDP in Andhra Pradesh and arranging B.S. Yeddyurappa's homecoming in Karnataka amid a host of others who significantly boosted the NDA's prospects ahead of the 2014 polls.

He has the uncommon ability to forge new friendships and retain old political associations, many of them allies from his father I.K. Gujral's brief term as PM in 1997.

He will be key to expanding NDA's base in the south and east. He has roped in old friend and Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik's BJD to give "issue-based support to the Modi Government in the Rajya Sabha". He is critical in preserving ties between the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab.

Art for art's sake

An avid collector of contemporary Indian art, he possesses works of almost every master. His most precious piece, he says, is a large oil-on-canvas etching by Rameshwar Broota.
