Town in the head-quarters subdivision of the District of the Twenty-four Parganas, Bengal, situated in 22° 30' N. and 88° 19' E., 4 miles south of Calcutta. Population (1901), 12,821. Tollygunge is a southern suburb of Calcutta, with which it is connected by an electric tramway, and the northern portion of it forms part of the 'Added Area' of Calcutta. It contains a police-station and the barracks of the Twenty-four Parganas police reserve, a steeplechase course, and the grounds of the Tollygunge Club, in which golf links have been laid out. Several of the descendants of Tipu Sultan's family have their residence here. Tollygunge was included in the South Suburban municipality until 1901, when a separate municipality was constituted. The income and expenditure during the three years since the constitution of the municipality averaged Rs. 15,000. In 1903-4 the income was Rs. 18,000, half of which was obtained from a tax on houses and lands ; and the expenditure was Rs. 19,500.
