He is always looking to do something bigger. A rice trader in Haryana, who diversified into packaging, amusement parks and the media, he established an empire with Zee Entertainment Enterprises. Its total reach is 730 million viewers.
He is the biggest overseas player in the industry with 34 international channels in 169 countries. His company Dish TV is Asia's largest Direct-to-Home player with 12 million subscribers.
Zee entered the health and wellness segment in the US through Veria Living in 2007, which was re-branded in September 2014 as Z Living.
He is anchoring his own show on Zee News and Zee Business to better connect with the youth, and his new general entertainment channel, Zindagi, launched in June 2014 with content sourced from Pakistan, has been well received.

In 2000,Essel Packaging owned by Subhash Chandra of Zee acquired Switzerland's Propack AG, and became the world’s largest producer of laminated tubes. The cash and stock deal resulted in Essel issuing 6.68 million shares to Propack’s promoters, in addition to a cash payment of $11 million. In subsequent years, Essel Propack continued acquisitions across the world and ventured into manufacturing of medical devices with the acquisition of Tapro Inc.,US and Avalon Medical Services, Singapore.
