‘Peethadhipati’ (head)

Chennai : Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham has identified a Rig Vedic scholar from Andhra Pradesh as its next ‘peethadhipati’ (head). The anointment of Duddu Satya Venkata Surya Subrahmanya Ganesha Sharma Dravid as the 71st Shankaracharya will be held at 6am on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya (April 30).


The announcement stated current Shankaracharya Vijayendra Saraswathi would bless sanyasa deeksha in Kanchipuram to Ganesha Sharma Dravid from Annavaram Kshetra in Andhra. Ganesha Sharma has served at Sri Gnana Saraswathi Devasthanam in Telangana. He completed Yajurveda, Samveda, Shadangas and Dashopanishat, and pursued shastric studies, according to the announcement.


Forty-two years ago, on May 29, 1983, a 14-year-old Sankaranarayanan was inducted into the mutt as Vijayendra Saraswathi. In 2018, he succeeded Jayendra Saraswathi as the 70th peethadhipati.
