Pithapuram Tahsil, 1908

Zamindari tahsil in Godavari District, Madras, lying between 17degree 3' and 17degree 19' N. and 82degree 10' and 82degree 32' E., with an area of 191 square miles. The population in 1901 was 84,089, compared with 83,824 in 1891. It contains one town, PITHAPURAM (population, 13,220), the head-quarters; and 48 villages. The demand on account of land revenue and cesses in 1903-4 amounted to Rs. 2,90,000. The tahsil lies on the coast to the north of the delta of the Godavari, and receives a low rainfall. It would be an infertile area were it not for the excellent irrigation from the Yeleru river.

Note: National, provincial and district boundaries have changed considerably since 1908. Typically, old states, ‘divisions’ and districts have been broken into smaller units, and many tahsils upgraded to districts. Some units have since been renamed. Therefore, this article is being posted mainly for its historical value.
