Introduction
Chandrashekhar Singh served as the 16th Chief Minister of Bihar from August 14, 1983, to March 12, 1985, a tenure lasting about 1 year and 210 days. He was handpicked by then Congress leader Indira Gandhi and took over after Jagannath Mishra resigned. Singh was a seasoned politician with over three decades of experience. He was elected multiple times to the Bihar Legislative Assembly and the Lok Sabha, representing constituencies such as Jhajha and Banka, where he defeated prominent socialist leader Madhu Limaye in 1980.
Born into a Rajput family in Jamui, his appointment reflected Congress's strategy of caste balancing between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. His tenure was marked by stabilizing the Congress government in Bihar, but he was sidelined shortly after the 1985 assembly elections in favor of Bindeshwari Dubey. Following his stint as Chief Minister, he was transitioned to national politics, serving as Union Minister of Petroleum under Rajiv Gandhi until his death in 1986 due to cancer. His political legacy includes a museum named after him in Jamui, Bihar.wikipedia+2
