New Delhi : A unique 16-sided tomb tucked away inside Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, likely dating back to the Lodi dynasty, has been conserved and illuminated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The monument was brought under ASI protection on Dec 12 last year.

According to officials, the conservation project, though modest in scale, has transformed the tomb into a presentable site. The work involved dismantling old plaster and skirting, raking out joints and applying a 40-50mm-thick lime plaster on walls and niches. A mild steel iron door was installed at the roof entrance, and landscaping was carried out with a fresh grass turf. To highlight the structure at night, 50-watt warm floodlights were also installed.

“The task at this site was very small compared to other monuments, but now the tomb is much more accessible and visually appealing,” said R K Patel, superintending archaeologist (Delhi circle).

Architecturally, the tomb is distinctive for its 16 sides and raised platform. Each side features deeply recessed arches, with the exception of the southern face, which serves as the entrance to the inner sanctum. Elements such as pointed niches and floral designs reflect the early 16th-century Lodi style, built largely in random rubble masonry and stone.
A staircase on the west of the main entrance leads to the rooftop, which holds an octagonal platform with three plastered cenotaphs. The identities of those buried remain unknown, though the central grave bears traces of broken calligraphic inscriptions on its side.

With conservation and lighting in place, ASI officials said the monument is expected to draw more visitors, both for its architectural uniqueness and its atmospheric setting within the bustling sports complex.
