Dubai : In a high-octane clash that saw India chase down Pakistan’s 171 with six wickets to spare, captain Suryakumar Yadav offered a rare glimpse into the mindset and chemistry driving the team’s recent success. At the heart of India’s fireworks was Abhishek Sharma, the 25-year-old Punjab dynamo whose blazing performances have illuminated the T20 stage.


The opener’s selfless style and sharp cricketing brain have made him one of India’s most exciting T20 prospects. Even in the face of Pakistan’s on-field theatrics, Abhishek stood unfazed and hammered an unforgettable 74 off 39 deliveries to set up India’s memorable win. 
Surya didn’t hold back in his praise for Abhishek, highlighting a trait that often goes unnoticed in Indian cricket — selflessness. “He’s very selfless when it comes to his batting style,” Surya said after the win. “Even after the Powerplay, he can bat the same way. But what makes him special is how he analyses the situation — what’s required of him, what bowlers are going to bowl. That’s a big plus.”


Over the past six months, Abhishek has evolved into a player who not only scores quickly but also smartly. Surya emphasised his ability to learn from every game and adapt his role — whether it’s anchoring the innings or accelerating when needed. “He takes one game at a time. Importantly, he never misses a practice session. Even if he’s not batting, he’s on the ground doing something. That hunger, that discipline — if you keep working hard, God always has plans for you.”


Reflecting on the opening pair — Abhishek and Shubman Gill — who dismantled Pakistan with a 105-run stand, Surya likened their partnership to “fire and ice”. “The way both bat — it’s like a fire-and-ice combination. They complement each otherwell,” he said. “If someone is batting brilliantly, the other one can take a backseat, rotate the strike and let the flow continue. Both of them batted beautifully. A good start was required today and they gave it.” 


This balanced approach — aggression tempered with smart rotation — ensured India maintained momentum, turning a potentially tricky chase into a dominant display. On a lighter note, Surya couldn’t resist chuckling about the inseparable bond between Gill and Abhishek. Whether grinding it out in the nets, strategising in the war room or helping each other in optional sessions, these two are practically joined at the hip. “It is really important to be very, very good friends off the field,” Surya said. “If you’re batting together, opening together, that really helps strengthen your bond.


“Sometimes you don’t have to say anything on the field — just look into each other’s eyes, give a cheeky signal or offer a compliment if someone is going strong or having a hard day.” 
This ‘bromance’ is proving to be a tactical trump card. Their unspoken understanding fuels a partnership that’s as intuitive as it is lethal. And Shubman, back in the T20 fold after a hiatus, cleared doubts over his place with a breezy knock.
