2019: bags Cup gold with world mark
Tushar Dutt, July 20, 2019: The Times of India
Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar clinched his maiden international gold. The Madhya Pradesh boy topped the men’s 50m rifle 3poisition final along with a new junior final World Record at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. This was his first big medal at this stage as he had finished fourth at the World Championships in Changwon, Korea, last year.
Son of a farmer in Khargone village in Madhya Pradesh, Aishwarya defeated World Championships silver medallist Zalan Pekler by 4.5 points. The Indian scored 459.3, which is a new finals junior world record. He broke the earlier record of 458.7 set by Czech shooter Filip Nepejchal in Beijing earlier this year.
Aishwarya was ecstatic after his win. “As always, there was a lot of pressure, but I managed it well today. I was upset when I missed a medal at the World Championships. Also, we have not won any World Cup medal in 3position since a couple of years, so today’s win is special for me,” the shooter told TOI from Suhl. On Friday, Aishwarya qualified by scoring 1171, a total score from kneeling, standing and prone position (40 shots each). In the final, he took early lead from the 15-shots of kneeling position.
He lost the lead in the second series, prone, to the Hungarian, by 1.7 points, but recovered in the standing position and never looked back. He surged ahead in the last four and consolidated his lead by shooting 10.3, 10.7, 10.6 and 10.4 in his last four shots. The bronze went to China’s Changhong Zhang with 442.8.
Aishwarya trains at Madhya Pradesh Shooting Academy in Bhopal under national high-performance coach Suma Shirur. “This was a well-deserved medal. He shot really well to earn this gold today. He has been working hard since past two years and has missed out on a few chances. He will go a long way as Aishwarya is young, technically sound and a fit shooter,” Suma said. With Aishwarya’s gold, India finished on top of the medals tally. With 10 gold, 9 silver and 5 bronze (total 24), Indian shooters pipped China to second spot (8 gold, 8 silver, 8 bronze).
