WORLD’S FIRST NUDIST CLUB WAS IN THANE
The earliest known naturist club in the world known to have existed was in British India — the short-lived Fellowship of the Naked Trust — founded in 1891 by Charles Edward Gordon Crawford, a district and sessions judge for the Bombay Civil Service in Thane. The commune had its beginnings in Matheran and Tulsi Lake with just three members: Crawford and two sons of an Anglican missionary. The club required members to go stark naked, but accessories like rings, eyeglasses and false teeth were permitted. The club ended when its founding father died in 1894.
