Dhanauri among 720 listed wetlands in GB Nagar

The Gautam Budh Nagar forest department has listed 720 waterbodies, marshes and other semi-wetland patches in the district as `wetlands'. Officials said the list, which includes the Dhanauri wetland, will soon be submitted to the National Green Tribunal. The Dhanauri wetland was last year detected by environmentalist Anand Arya, who had then filed a petition at the green court, seeking protection of the wetland as it is a breeding ground for the Sarus Crane, the state bird of Uttar Pradesh. With its listing as a wetland, Dha nauri ceases to be a `residential' area as marked in the Noida Masterplan.

The Dhanauri area that falls under the administration of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial development Authority has also been marked officially as a wetland in a recent YEIDA board meeting. Moreover, a proposal to develop Dhanauri as a sanctuary has also been floated.

“We have recorded over 720 wetlands in Gautam Budh Nagar, including Dhanauri. However, no special provision for its protection has been made. But when an area is marked as a wetland, its natural habitat becomes directly protected by the listing itself,“ district forest officer KK Singh told TOI.

The Wetlands Conservation and Management Rules of 2010, passed under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, had directed all state governments to identify and list all wetlands with the ministry of environment and forests. However, the UP government had failed to do the job.
